Estimate Your Benefit Offset

What is the benefit offset?

For every $2 you earn over the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amount your SSDI cash benefit will be reduced by $1. This is called the benefit offset. The SGA amount for 2008 is $940 ($1,570 if blind). In 2007, it was $900 ($1,500 if blind).  Completing the form below will help you estimate what your benefit offset will be depending on how much you earn from work. Remember this is just an estimate!  There are many other factors that may affect your SSDI benefit check such as additional work incentives that you will want to discuss with a Benefits Planner/Counselor in your state.

Estimator

Social Security determines the amount of a person’s monthly benefit offset based on an estimate of their yearly income. By answering the questions below you can get a general idea of what your monthly benefit offset will be based on your estimated yearly income.  This is only an estimate! If you are using other work incentives such as an Impairment Related Work Expense or a Subsidy please talk with your Benefits Counselor about how these incentives will affect your benefit offset. If your estimated yearly income goes up or down by more than a $1,000 during the year you will want to get a new estimate by entering the new amounts below.
